A two-storey car park solved the parking problem but required deft design
to reduce its impact on the area’s character. Planting was therefore used
to soften the structure: the car park periphery was planted at two levels, with
raised planters cantilevered off the upper deck as well as amenity shrub planting
at ground level; specially selected high-canopied semi-mature trees emerge from
the car park central lightwell to visually break up the expanse of car parking
on the upper deck; and tree and shrub planting along the service road punctuated
more distant views to the store and car park.
