Stanmore

This was a new supermarket development in a tight urban situation. The challenge was to maintain the residential character of the area and the privacy and security of surrounding houses, while achieving sufficient car parking and creating a commercial frontage for the store which had no negative impact on an adjacent grade II listed building.
A two-storey car park solved the parking problem but required deft design to reduce its impact on the character of the area. Every opportunity was therefore taken to use planting to soften the structure.
A small public open space was created at the front of the store, incorporating semi-mature trees and public art. This softened the interface between the adjacent listed building and the modern store elevation.
