Studley Tower is a 1960’s tower block in the Highgate area of Birmingham. Prior to the environmental enhancement works its surroundings were bleak and uninviting with heaps of rubble and haphazardly parked cars.
Arthur Amos Associates brief was to provide designated car parking spaces and a residents’garden. The design was developed in close liaison with residents and Birmingham City Council Housing Department. Parking was provided in areas overlooked by the building to increase security. An enclosed garden with lawns, planting and seating areas was created with access restricted to residents only. Improved lighting and open views throughout the site increased the potential for natural surveillance and therefore reduced the possibility of anti-social behaviour. Bespoke signage and railings enclosing the whole site completed the enhancement works and helped create a distinctive identity for Studley Tower.
