Sainsbury’s proposed new Selly Oak district centre, is a major mixed-use urban development, on a strategically located, but derelict and partly contaminated brown-field site. The site is at an historic crossroads and forms an important link within the economic, educational, medical, transport, leisure and ecological networks of south Birmingham.
Arthur Amos Associates have been involved in the planning, design and environmental assessment of this scheme for the last 14 years; including archaeological, ecological, landscape / townscape, and visual impact assessment and mitigation.
The scheme relies heavily on landscape enhancements including 3.75ha of roof gardens proposed within it. The proposals include: ground decontamination, new canal basin and link canal, sustainable drainage including 2 flood storage / ecological wetland areas, restored allotments, new urban park and playground, new community centre, multi-modal transport interchange. All car parking has been designed to be hidden below ground level under buildings and roof gardens.
